Understanding Volleyball Skill Levels

Our league uses the following skill level classifications to help ensure fair and competitive play. Please review these descriptions to determine which level best matches your abilities.

Our current season is being played at the B/BB (Intermediate) level. As we grow, we plan to add additional divisions for different skill levels.

A

Advanced

Serving

Consistent jump serves with power and accuracy. Can strategically place serves to exploit weaknesses.

Passing

Exceptional platform and overhead passing. Can handle the hardest serves with control.

Setting

Precise sets from any position. Advanced back sets and quick sets. Can run complex offenses.

Hitting

Powerful and varied attacks from all positions. Advanced shot selection and court vision.

Blocking

Strong read blocking. Can effectively block line and angle. Good timing and penetration.

BB

High Intermediate

Serving

Consistent jump or standing serves with good power. Can place serves with moderate accuracy.

Passing

Solid platform passing. Can handle moderately paced serves with good control most of the time.

Setting

Accurate sets from good passes. Can back set with moderate consistency. Runs basic offenses.

Hitting

Consistent attacks with power. Developing shot selection. Can hit from back row.

Blocking

Good timing on blocks. Can read hitters and adjust. Developing penetration skills.

B

Intermediate

Serving

Consistent standing serves. Beginning to develop jump serves. Can serve to general areas.

Passing

Decent platform passing. Can handle moderate serves with some control. Still working on consistency.

Setting

Sets are generally accurate from good passes. Developing back sets. Runs basic plays.

Hitting

Consistent attacks with moderate power. Developing approach and arm swing mechanics.

Blocking

Basic blocking skills. Can time jumps but still developing reading and penetration skills.

C

Recreational

Serving

Basic underhand or standing serves. Working on consistency and getting serves in play.

Passing

Developing platform skills. Can pass easy serves with some control. Still learning proper technique.

Setting

Basic setting ability. Can set from good passes. Still working on consistency and accuracy.

Hitting

Developing approach and arm swing. Can hit basic attacks with some consistency.

Blocking

Basic understanding of blocking. Still working on timing and technique.
